Welcome to Pelaw and Pelton Reception classes.

We offer a high-quality, well-sequenced early education that prepares children for success throughout the rest of their school life. The children in our classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. They learn through a balance of child-initiated play activities as well as adult directed tasks and small group times. Language development is carefully supported by knowledgeable staff.

We have such a busy time in Reception! Here are just some of the things the children learn to do:

  • Read and write, through our phonics scheme ‘Read, Write, Inc.’
  • Develop a deep understanding of numbers to 10 including counting, subitising and recalling number bonds.
  • Work co-operatively with others.
  • Explore the seasons in the school grounds and gardens
  • Develop their imagination and language skills

The themes we follow throughout the year include:

  • My family and me
  • My school community
  • My feelings and emotions
  • What are celebrations?
  • Hot and cold places

Each week we focus on a different book – the theme of the book fits our topic and we re-read it several times to develop key vocabulary. As the year goes on, we build up a collection of treasured stories the children can enjoy sharing and exploring in depth through role play and creative activities. We foster language development through story times, rhyme time and supportive interactions with knowledgeable staff.

We have a fantastic outdoor area which we use in all weathers thanks to our wellies and waterproof clothing. The children enjoy investigating nature, working cooperatively in the sandpit and exploring water and messy play.

We develop our physical skills and wellbeing though a weekly yoga session. We are also very lucky to have a weekly session with our PE coach, Mr Stephenson and we go swimming in our school pool in the summer term.

As you can see, we work hard and learn lots in Reception and of course have great fun along the way!
