Welcome to Pelton Class, we are mix of Year 1 and Reception children. Although the children are different ages, we are a single team. We begin and end each day as a class and then also spend time exploring topics, playing and having special events together. But most importantly we have fun. Pelton children also share workspace and learning and play areas with Pelaw Class.
Reception class is where children are introduced to full-time education and it’s a big step! The children in Pelton Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. They learn through a balance of child-initiated play activities as well as adult directed tasks and small group times. Language development is carefully supported by knowledgeable staff.
We have such a busy time in Reception! Here are just some of the things the children learn to do:
- Read and write, through our phonics scheme ‘Read, Write, Inc.’
- Develop a deep understanding of numbers to 10 including counting, subitising and recalling number bonds.
- Work co-operatively with others.
- Explore the seasons in the school grounds and gardens
- Develop their imagination and language skills
The themes we follow throughout the year include:
- My family and me
- My school community
- My feelings and emotions
- What are celebrations?
- Hot and cold places
Pelton Year 1 children go onto develop these early skills through following a topic-based curriculum based on the Year 1 requirements of the National Curriculum. Each day we start with a daily phonics lesson, maths, literacy and a range of other subjects. During the afternoon we explore other subjects. PE is always a favourite in our class. We are also very lucky to e go swimming in our school pool in the summer term.
In Pelton we have a reading folder which needs to be in school every day. Reception children will bring home a library book and some phonics homework every week.
Year 1 children will have a reading, homework and library books. We ask that you listen to your child read as often as you can and comment on their reading at least twice a week in their reading record book. Reading books are usually changed twice a week. We also encourage children to read the book several times.
