Lessons
Hello and welcome to Penshaw’s Page. We are a mixed Year 4 and 5 class who have lots of fun in a happy, inclusive and creative classroom.
Reading is very important in Penshaw Class, so we start our mornings with quiet reading for pleasure before heading off to assembly.
The first lesson of the day is English. This term we have been writing a journalistic report on the traditional tale of Little Red Riding Hood. We are also reading the novel ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ by Michelle Magorian, writing about the characters and comparing settings. We read a variety of genres using different tools – books, online books, audio books. We read independently but it’s also great to sit and listen to a book being read aloud by our teacher.
Following morning break, daily maths covers everything from addition to fractions, measurement and statistics. We are currently focussing on place value. We use a variety of equipment to help us, from counters to laptops! We heavily focus on all the times tables, from two’s up to twelves. We love using online games on Times Tables Rock Stars and Timestables.co.uk to really make learning our tables fun!
Each week, we practice our tricky spelling words. We start to learn a new set each weekend as part of our homework and then we participate in a range of activities to help them stick in our memory. At the end of the week we take a spelling test to see how well we have done – another ten out of ten!
On an afternoon it’s time to learn a variety of subjects. This term’s science topic is ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.’ We have been planting seeds in ‘sustainable plant pots’ to see which reused item would be the best choice for growing plants. We’ve been getting creative in D.T. designing structures that can hold a 500g weight or more! In RE, we are learning about Judaism, in Music we are learning to play the glockenspiel and we’ve been looking at loops and coding in ICT. We’re very lucky in Penshaw, because we have enough laptops for everyone in the class!
Taking care of our physical health is important to us, so we really enjoy our weekly swimming and P.E lessons. Gymnastics is our topic for this half term, creating routines using a variety of jumps, stretches, balances and transitions. We recognise that mental health is important too, so we take part in regular R_PSHE sessions and movement breaks.
Finally, our topic in Geography this half term is Settlements. We have been looking at settlements and atlases, making decisions about why people choose to live where they do. We found out that you can recognise who created a town or city by their name. Did you know the ‘Chester’ in Chester-Le-Street means castle and is of Roman origin?
Thank you for visiting Penshaw’s page. Come back soon to find out what other exciting things we have been doing.
