A letter to the children from Mrs Lloyd

April 27, 2020 by admin

I hope you are enjoying your time at home with your families. I expect that that you have all settled into a routine where you do some learning, some exercise and of course some playing. I’m sure a lot of you will be spending quite a bit of time online whether it be doing school work, gaming or socialising with your friends. Make sure you stay extra safe if you are going online. The simple rule you must follow is only interact and communicate with people online who you really know in the real world. Please get tips with your parents/carers, from NSPCC, NetAware, UK Safer Internet Centre and Internet Matters.

Your teachers are all missing every one of you and would love to see some photos showing us what you have been doing, whether it’s learning, exercising or playing. Email your photos to bullionlane@durhamlearning.net and we will share them on the school Facebook page.

The Facebook page has lots of links to different websites with lots of things for you to do. Ask your parents to show you and also look out for messages from your teachers.

Try not to worry about what is happening in the world. You just need to follow the Government’s instructions and STAY HOME to STAY SAFE. Life is a bit different at the moment to what everybody is used to but you can use this opportunity to do things you might not normally do and to learn new things.

Some of you might be worried about missing school. You don’t need to be. When we open again, we will take it slowly, get back into school routines, spend lots of time with our friends, do lots of playing and we will all achieve what we would have achieved even if school didn’t shut. You will all have so many new skills too that you have learned by being at home.

Remember stay safe and hopefully I will see you all again very soon.

Mrs Dawson’s ideas

April 14, 2020 by admin

Hi Everybody,

I hope you have all enjoyed the Easter weekend as much as possible, and haven’t eaten too many Easter eggs!
Mrs Dawson has been wondering how you all are, and has been busy researching new ideas. She has sent you this letter:

Hello everyone, Mrs Dawson here,
I hope that you are all well and staying safe during this unusual time we are all facing. I have been staying at home and helping Taylor with his schoolwork, this is a little harder than I thought!!! We celebrated Easter this weekend, and I hope you had fun celebrating with your family. Ours was a lot quieter than usual but we still managed to have an egg hunt and lunch together.
I’m sure that you have been working through your home-school packs that we sent home, there are some great websites to help support your learning whilst school is closed. All of these are important and will help to keep your brain active and help with your well-being.
This is a very strange and worrying time for everyone at the moment and it is just as important that we look after our mental and emotional well-being too. I have been having a look at some useful websites/activities that will promote positive mental and emotional wellbeing. Why don’t you see if you can try some out and let me know what you think?
Here are a few you can try:
www.childline.org.uk/toolbox/calm-zone
A toolbox of activities such as breathing exercises, coping videos, yoga videos and games that can help you feel calm in a period of disruption.
www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers
Lots of interactive videos to support with KS1 & KS2 Maths, Literacy, PSHE and PE. Great for times tables – as well as videos that are ‘just for fun’.
www.twinkl.co.uk
There is a vast range of mindfulness and wellbeing activities on here to promote positive mental health. The mindfulness colouring sheets are great.
www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga
This is great for our younger pupils who can take part in yoga sessions based around a story.
https://plprimarystars.com/
This has been a favourite in our house during the ‘lockdown’. It has lots of activities to support you Maths, Literacy, PSHE and PE. They also have a ‘Friday family challenge’ so you could all get involved as a family for a bit of fun.
www.bbc.co.uk/newsround
I know the news can be a little scary right now, you may not understand everything that is happening. Newsround keeps you up to date with the world around you, creating opportunities to talk about what is happening.
These are just a few that I found and have used myself and found useful, you may have others that you enjoy doing yourself. That said we also know that too much screen time can have a negative effect on our mental and emotional well-being so I’ve got some other things for you to try.

You could also do some of the following:
• Try something new.
• Do some exercise every day in a safe way.
• Play your favourite game.
• Watch a new or favourite movie.
• Do something that you really enjoy.
• Take some time to relax.
• Read a story to someone in your family.
• Do something nice for someone.
• You could cook together with a grown up in your family.
• Why not try some drawing or colouring in.
• Dance to a song on the radio.
The main thing is that you stay safe and stay well in the current conditions. I know we all want to just return to ‘normal’ and when this happens, I will be so excited to see you all coming through the gates that morning.
Take Care, Stay Safe and hope to see you soon!
Mrs Dawson

School Closures Updates

March 19, 2020 by admin

* From Monday, between 12.00 and 12.30, children who are entitled to a free school meal can pick up a packed lunch from the school kitchen door.

*List of key workers as set out generally by the government today are as follows: NHS staff, Police officers, Firefighters, Supermarket delivery drivers and workers, Care home workers, Armed forces, Teachers/Support staff in schools and Prison officers. This could change slightly pending the definitive list from the government.

*The government advice is that where alternative provision is available (for example, where mum is a key worker and dad is not), then children should be cared for at home.
The Local Authority have issued a form that must be completed by key workers who need school provision by Friday at 1pm.
The form is available from this website.
If you fall within this category then please either email the form to bullionlane@durhamlearning.net or pick up a paper copy from Miss Barningham’s office during the morning of Friday 20th March between 8.30am and 12pm and complete it there.
Depending on numbers, as we are very short staffed as a result of the virus restrictions, then it is possible that your child could be given alternative provision in another local school.

*Parents of children who are classed under the guidelines as ‘vulnerable ‘ will be contacted individually.

*Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding during this very difficult time.

School Closure Updates

March 17, 2020 by admin

Dear Parent/Carer,
I know you are all aware of the current situation regarding Coronavirus. After the Government guidelines last night, whereby self-isolation and underlying health conditions are concerned, we have no option but to close the school from tomorrow, as from a staffing point of view we will be unable to function.
All children will be provided with a work pack for them to access some learning on a daily basis. In addition to the pack, children should read, learn times tables and spellings. Details will be sent out by each class teacher. They will also include details of websites. The website ‘Twinkl’ has a lot of activities that children can access.
School will be closed from Wednesday 18th March until at least Monday 30th March, but we are awaiting further Government guidelines about this.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this will cause but the health and safety of children and staff is paramount.
Any further updates will be posted on the school website (www.bullionlane.durham.sch.uk).
Thank you in anticipation of your support,
Yours sincerely,
Sarah Barningham (Head Teacher)

Spring Term

February 11, 2020 by admin

Inside Out!
Thank you to everyone who came to school with all/part
of their uniform inside out last Friday. As it was Children’s Mental
Health week this was a symbolic way of saying ‘I’m getting what’s on
the inside out,’ encouraging children to talk about their feelings.
Mental Health awareness is very important to us in school and is a
key initiative that we are involved in through lessons, workshops and
assemblies.

• ‘Safer Internet Day’ ‘Together for a Better Internet.’
During assembly and lessons, we have discussed the importance of
playing/viewing age appropriate games/material. Please talk to your
child about being safe and courteous when online.

• Help the Animals!
A huge thank you to Waldridge class who set up 2
fundraising afternoons and raised £200 for the animals of Australia
who have lost their homes. Games included: ‘Pin the nose on the koala’
and ‘Catch the beanbags in the kangaroo’s pouch!’ Thanks to everyone
who took part.

• Cross Country
Well done to all pupils who took part in the crosscountry league. Congratulations in particular go to Kai Washbrooke,
who was in the top 20 for all 3 races. This is a fabulous achievement!
Thanks also to Mr Hood who gave up his Saturday mornings to allow
our children to take part.
